My name is Yetunde Omobola Okelanfa. I am from Nigeria, and I identify as bisexual. Here in Canada, I have been able to live more openly as a bisexual woman. This is something I could never do freely in Nigeria because of how people like me are treated.

I am currently in a relationship with Faith Iye Ogbadu. Being able to be in this relationship without constantly hiding who I am means a lot to me. When my family found out about my sexuality, they were angry and did not accept it. I was also reported to the authorities back home because of my sexuality, and I do not feel that I can safely return to Nigeria.

I have also met with other LGBTQ people and have been able to talk about my experiences without feeling that I have to hide who I am. I am glad that my partner Faith introduced me to this community because I feel accepted and comfortable being myself. I have also had the opportunity to volunteer and help with some of the community’s activities.

Being around other people like me has helped me become more comfortable and open about my sexuality. It has also allowed me to experience a kind of freedom that I never had in Nigeria. My hope is to remain in Canada, continue living openly as a bisexual woman, and continue supporting and helping others in the community.
